Two bottles stand side by side in the classical hair tradition. One holds a single herb in sesame: Bhringraj oil, the simplest preparation there is. The other holds one of classical's most celebrated formulas: Neelibhringadi Thailam (a Thailam is a classical herbal oil prepared by slow decoction), where Bhringraj shares the recipe with indigo leaf (Neeli, which gives the oil its name), Amla and a richer classical base. Both are authentic. They are not the same product, and choosing between them is easier once you know what each is for.
The case for the single herb
Bhringraj oil is the everyday workhorse of the tradition. Its two-ingredient composition makes it light enough for weekly use on every hair type, unscented beyond the natural character of herb and sesame, and completely predictable: nothing in it surprises the skin. It suits people who want the classical weekly ritual without ceremony, and it suits beginnings. If you have never oiled your hair in your life, this is the bottle to start with. Ours is prepared in the traditional way, described in Bhringraj oil the classical way: the whole herb, pure sesame, nothing else. You will find it here: Bhringraj Hair Oil.
The case for the classical formula
Neelibhringadi is the deep treatment of the pair. Its fuller classical preparation gives it a richness the single-herb oil deliberately avoids, and the fuller herb list makes it the oil the tradition brings out when hair has been through a difficult season and needs generous, concentrated care. It carries a stronger natural scent and asks a little more of the washing-out. Our Neelibhringadi Thailam is the classical preparation.
A simple way to decide
For the standing weekly ritual, the single-herb Bhringraj oil. For periods when the hair deserves the full classical treatment, Neelibhringadi, used once a week until the season passes. Many households keep both and let the hair decide the week. Whichever bottle you choose, the method is the same and matters more than the choice: the unhurried scalp massage from our technique guide, and the patience to keep the rhythm.
Our Bhringraj Hair Oil contains sesame; the full ingredient list of each oil is on its product page. A patch test is sensible for sensitive skin.
